Foça

The county of Izmir is located on the peninsula between Foça, Çandarlı Gulf and İzmir Gulf. In order to protect archaeological, architectural and natural riches, it was declared a Special Environmental Protection Area in 1990.


How to get to Foça


Foça, 668 km to Istanbul, 85km to Bergama, 65 km to Izmir. The bus leaves from İzmir Garage to Foça.
Those who come from Istanbul with a special vehicle need to deviate from Foça on Çanakkale İzmir road. The ones coming from Ankara can reach through Afyon.

Places to Visit in Foça


Foça is based on a peninsula between Çandarlı Gulf and İzmir Gulf. Foça was one of the important centers of the Ions who settled in the Aegean coasts and escaped the Dorian invasion in Greece and built many settlements here including Smyrna. The ancient Foça city belongs to 12 Ionian associations. Foça, who took the name of the ancient "Phokaia", had an important harbor and sea power in his time.

The Phokaia city, which entered the period of rapid ascension starting from the 7th century BC, showed great improvement in maritime according to Heredot. Phokaaiaklar, who used speedboats in the 50-paddle and 500-passenger carrying capacity, was the first Hellenes to come out on a long voyage. It was declared a special environmental protection zone in order to protect archaeological, architectural and nature riches.

The old villages of Foça and Yeni Foça are the most beautiful beaches of the county. It is possible to reach many small islands and bays surrounded by boat tours within Foça. These include the Orak Island, the Incir Island and the Siren Rocks, which are home to Mediterranean monk seals. Apart from these, there are also monuments that will protrude 7 kilometers from Foça, amongst other places where castle walls, Kybele temple and Şeytan public bath can be seen between Small sea and Big sea.

Islands


There are many species of birds besides monk seals (Atatürk), Metallic, Sickle, Pide, Lantern (Capricorn), Donkey, Fig. The Siren Rocks, which has earned its reputation since antiquity, is on the south-west of Orak Island, the largest of the islands on Foça. On these rocks are seals; There are a total of six caves, one underwater and five on land. It is forbidden to go out to rocks, swim and hunt in the island because it is the shelter of the Mediterranean seals. In other islands only angling is allowed.

Siren Rocks




The name Siren Rocks, from the legendary mermaids of the shipwrecked with their beautiful sounds, is on the south-west of Orak Island. There are Mediterranean seals in one of the six caves underwater and five in the land. From here Homer refers to "the rocks where the ships that were struck by the stunned ships".

Satan Bath (Şeytan Hamamı)




The structure, located 2 km from Foça, on the edge of Çan Tepesi, is known as Şeytan Hamamı (Satan Bath) .

Beşkapılar


The boathouse belonging to the Ottoman castle, located at the far end of the Foça Gulf's westernmost peninsula, has been named Beşkapılar because of its five arches. The Ottoman fortress is located on the archaic period walls which were repaired by the Ottomans during the 16th and 17th centuries in the 13th century.

Kybele sanctuary


The sanctuary overlooking the ancient lima dates to the beginning of the 6th century BC. After the excavations, the sanctuary, which gained the appearance of an open air museum, was dedicated to Kybele, the oldest Mother Goddess of Anatolia. Walking along the beach 200 meters from the Five Gates, this open-air temple and a Cybele relief are visible.

Fatih Mosque


The mosque built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet after the conquest of Foca in 1455 is on the Old Adliye Street.

Hafız Süleyman Ağa Masjid


Known as the Suleyman Agha Masjid among the people, the building was built by Foça Tower Dizdar Hamzaoglu Mustafa in 1548.

Phokaia




The Ionian town on the highway linking the old Foça to the new Foça is located in the Aiol region. Phokaia, which can be traced back to the 8th century BC, was the most important center of the Kybele temple. From the Athena Temple, the daily column headings of the Ion have remained. The tomb monument 8 kilometers east of the city is known as Taşkule among the people.

Panaztepe


Menemen, 13 km west of the settlement, dates down to 4 BC. At Panaztepe, which is at least ten times the area of Troia, it has various building remnants and ceramic fragments.

Larissa


The city near Menemen is dated to the end of the 8th century BC. Among the ruins are the temples and parts of the city walls of the acropolis.
